What we did in Germany Stuttgart

Another very long over due blog post (I blame the multiple trips and a broken laptop) but still one I wanted to share. Visiting Germany at Christmas time has always been on my wish list. Unfortunately this holiday did not go exactly the way we planned it, it was still amazing to finally visit the beautiful country that is Germany. We stayed in Stuttgart, beautiful place shit hotel, and decided, just due to the fact we weren't staying there for long, to just stay in Stuttgart instead of visiting the surrounding areas also. So before I can baffle anymore lets talk about the places we visited.

Porsche Museum

For those of you who don't know, Alec is a BIG car van so, due to being located next to the museum and Porsches being gorgeous cars we knew we had to go. The building is absolutely beautiful and located perfectly in the middle of the Porsche museums and shops which made for great window shopping. Entry was super cheap at just 8 euros each which is 100% worth it for what you get to see. With this, you get access to the restaurant, cafe and shop along with the ability to watch factory work taking place which was weirdly entertaining. The museum has around 100 cars ranging from the first Porsche to the latest models which if you got lucky, you were able to get a deeper look into. This is rare though and not possible with all of their vehicles. We spent about 3 hours here which went really quickly and definitely could have spent longer if Alec wanted to. The cars in the museum do change every so often as they have a warehouse close by with about 600 cars in, so you never know what you will see when you go. Even if you aren't that big into cars like me, I do recommend at least visiting the area just to see some of the stunning cars they just have sitting on the side of the road.

Pleasure Garden

Yep you read that right, the pleasure garden. We stumbled upon this when walking to the pig museum and as a big ruins lover I needed to go explore. One thing I will add that I loved about Germany is that most signs, even just direction sides, were in German and English which is how I got to find out about these ruins being part of the pleasure garden.  The pleasure garden is actually the Ruine des Neuen Lusthauses and was built for Duke Ludwig and is one of the most significant secular buildings of the Renaissance. The ruins and gardens were beautiful and I imagine to be super popular in the summer due to the vast amount of green space and water features. I recommend if visiting to do so during spring or summer.

Pig Museum

The pig museum, Schweine Museum, was the one place I was desperate to visit whilst we were in Stuttgart. My favourite animal has always been a pig and have always had a large pig teddy collection, well I thought it was large until we saw the pig teddy pile, or as I like to see it, pig heaven! This museum is more than 800 square meters with 29 themed rooms and more than 2000 piggy banks. Again entry to this museum was pretty cheap at 5.90 which includes access to the very popular restaurant, Schlachthof, and the small gift shop selling weird and wonderful pig merchandise. I obviously got a crystal pig because why wouldn't you. Surprisingly not many piggy banks were on sale but the shop was really well priced so perfect if you are going with kids. Saying that, you may want to avoid the horny pig room if you are travelling as a family! Just thought I would give you the heads up.

Palace Square

The Schlossplatz Palace Square is in the heart of the city surrounded by the renaissance architecture and the stunning houses of the 1950s. Intertwined with this is a small shopping center with multiple places to eat, the market hall and a few museums. Just further down from the Palace Square are more shops which is more fashion specific but personally we didn't find this the best place to shop compared to other areas in Stuttgart. With that, we did visit this area most of the days simply due to the area having the main tram station and lovely views of the town center. 100% a must visit.

Wurttemberg State Museum

In all honestly this wasn't a great museum for tourists. It had lovely antiques ranging from the Celts to current affairs. If you are local to the area or have a big interest in German history then I do suggest visiting but there isn't that much text in English which makes the museum difficult to enjoy in my opinion. Don't get me wrong, the building and artifacts are nice to look at but we found it dragged near the end and was easy to get lost within the rooms. One thing we noticed was the staff were always following visitors around the room but when you looked at them they would just stand there or go on their phones without any interest in helping. Maybe we just went on a bad day but we found it weird.

Suttgart Market Hall

I had to include the market hall as we really enjoyed visiting and seeing what we considered a 'proper' market with a wide range of stalls with amazing looking foods and the smells were unreal. It easy to see why Stuttgarts Market Hall has a great reputation. Within the markets are multiple places to eat which we had to stop at and where we had our best meal of the whole holiday. If you are in the area you really need to go in even if its just to look at the building!

Have you ever been to Stuttgart?
I 100% would go again especially closer to Christmas!

Talk to you later x
